Everyone has at least once been faced with standard topographic maps - whether at school at geography lessons, or when travelling. These maps are known for giving a very accurate presentation of the landscape. They display all the objects with scaling and using different colors and lines. Though standard topographic maps represent by the highest standards a set of symbols that aren't so simple for a customary user to comprehend. From time to time you need a professional to explain some features on the map. In any case, it'll take some time and efforts to learn the topography language. Fortunately, there are plenty of other ways to depict an area. They are numerous, but can be divided into three groups: - Illustrated maps - Panoramic maps - Pictorial maps You can surmise what these kinds of maps constitute by their names, but nevertheless we will give some explanation to prevent confusion. In this way, an illustrated map is a topographic map with some added illustrations. It signifies that certain objects on the map (for example, churches, places of activity or some other features) will be indicated by small icons. This type of maps is the closest one to the classical variant. A panoramic map can be referred to as a picture of the landscape. From time to time it's also called a perspective since it portrays a certain area as it is viewed from above. Such maps are very accurate about dimensions, but on the other hand, various individual objects are scarcely distinguishable or even not distinguishable at all. Such type of maps is popular in certain branches such as ski resorts depiction. As far as pictorial map is concerned this kind is concentrated on the details, but not at following accurate sizes. Individual objects are portrayed with their distinctive features and, consequently, are easily recognizable. On the other hand, distances don't always agree with the reality, now and then the landscape can be slightly reduced or distorted since the stress is placed on the representation of objects. The given kind of maps enjoys wide popularity due to their nice looks, self-descriptiveness and easiness in use. Despite scale distortions they are great for navigating while planning a travel or seeking a certain place. |
